Israeli ex president Moshe Katsav, for a forgiveness, has requested the present head of state in prison for rape and other sexual offences, the office of President Reuven Rivlin said on Sunday.
“As is the custom with every request for a pardon it’s been passed for managing to the presidential legal section,” the statement added.
The first Israeli head of state to be sent to penitentiary, Katsav, was jailed for seven years on sexual harassment along with two counts of rape, indecent actions and obstruction of justice in 2011.
Katsav’s 18-month trial contained accusations that were harrowing and depicted him as a sexual predator who regularly harassed his female staff. The offences perpetrated against his workers were said to have happened later as president and when he served as tourism minister.
Katsav became president in 2000, stepping down over the claims in 2007.
He was replaced in the mainly ceremonial post by Nobel Peace laureate Shimon Peres. Rivlin was elected to the place in June 2014 for a statutory seven-year period.
