An American soldier was killed in Afghanistan during an operation aimed at the Islamic State (EI) group.
A member of the US forces died of wounds received on August 16 during a joint operation of US and Afghan forces in eastern Afghanistan.
US and Afghan troops were also wounded during the operation to reduce the presence of rebels affiliated with the jihadist group in the country.
Train Afghan Forces
This death brings to 10 the number of American soldiers killed in action in Afghanistan this year, one more than in 2016. Two other soldiers were killed earlier this month in Kandahar in a Taliban suicide attack on their convoy.
At present, 8,400 Americans are participating in the NATO operation in Afghanistan, Resolute Support (RS), which has more than 13,000 troops in total. Most of them are responsible for mentoring and training Afghan forces.
The administration of President Donald Trump is currently finalizing its strategy for Afghanistan, a country where the United States has been engaged militarily for nearly 16 years.
